Nokia N97 Fanatics: A Comprehensive List Of Nokia N97 Firmware 2.0 Changes; Some You Might Not Have Noticed

  • Yahya · 1 month ago
I like the new firmware! Phone is faster and handles better.
But I have a problem with my Nokia Pc Suite. After the firmware update I had to get done at the Nokia servicepoint I can't do a thing using my NpcS
This is very frustrating can't install, or upload a thing on to my phone.
It says I have to reinstall my supportsoftware on my phone, but it just won't. Anyone any idea's?

    My thnx in advance

Ps: the site is very helpfull!!
  • Mike Macias · 1 month ago
So you alreay re-installed the support software by clicking "Help" in PC Suite when your N97 is connected?
  • Yahya · 1 month ago
That's the issue.. It just won't..
I'm starting to think it's my pc, but I'm not sure..

By the way, the strength and length of the vibe alerts is only different in the Silent profile. It remains unchanged for me in my Normal profile (ie. Still 2 vibes when I receive a text message for instance).

I noticed a very important improvement that I haven't mentioned yet simply because I couldn't figure out how to describe it. Here goes. When accessing the open apps by long pressing the menu key, a small context dialogue appears showing what the first app in the list actually is. Before v20 any tap or long press would simply make the small dialogue disappear, effectively making you do two taps instead of one. Now with v20, you simply have to tap the app you want to open, or long press the app you want to access (the context menu) and the small dialogue box goes away; it doesn't affect your tapping. Make sense? Give it try to see what I'm talking about.

"In contacts app details for Facebook, MSN, Yahoo, Ovi, Gizmo, Google, Skype have been added." <--not sure about all of these, but pretty sure that Skype, Yahoo, and gizmo were already on there...can't comment on the others as I don't remember if they were there or not. Also, the 'Call Alert Text' detail option in the contacts app appears new to me...I don't recall having it before (it's the last detail in the list when adding additional details to a contact).

"(we will cover this more extensively in the new future)" <---I'm pretty sure you meant NEAR future, but oddly enough, your words happen to fit the situation perfectly :) If in fact you intended to say NEW future, well then, sir, I commend you.

By the way, I realize that the "very important improvement" mentioned above might not seem that important to you...hahaha...it just so happens that it's important to me! (I hate extra steps/taps/menus/etc.).

    :)

  • jonjuk · 1 month ago
I also noticed this improvement with the task manager. I hated having to double tap to bring up the little menu to exit applications etc!

Also, what macdea mentioned about the "sliders" to answer the phone. Not only does the text make more "sense" but the area you can swipe your finger in is now bigger making it easier to swipe too.
  • Guest · 1 month ago
i agree jonjuk, v12 would never allow me to answer with the swipe, always had to unlock and press answer key, now with v20 its brilliant. I also debranded my device in order to get v20..why do companys take so long to update? Debrand was a easy-as!!

Great site guys, i also follow you on twitter. You appear to also have a good community here. Cheers

    Martin.

Hi, I debaranded my N97 after a couple frustrating weeks waiting for three uk to release V2.0. I then updated to 2.0. WOW! Major improvements. However I seemed to have lost Skype which is std on all Three phones. Any idea how to get it back? You mentioned "contact apps details for Facebook.... " Where do I find that. Searched everywhere but can't find it...
ps I am using Opera mini as my web browser and its brilliant.
  • MajorDouble7 · 1 month ago
I think you lost Skype because you unbranded your phone...as you say, it comes standard on 3 phones, correct? Skype isn't currently available on unbranded phones as an app yet. Supposed to be coming soon. In the meantime, I use Nimbuzz...worth checking out until Skype gets up and running with N97.

Hi, I've just bought an unbranded N97 on Amazon and it doesn't have any options for adding instant messaging information in the Contacts app as mentioned here. Is it because it's unbranded? Isn't there a way of adding it?
I've tried Nimbuzz and it's ok, but not great. It has very "tiny" notifications. Just a small beep, nothing on the display...
    Thanks everyone!
  • MajorDouble7 · 1 month ago
I have an unbranded N97 and I also added Nimbuzz. The messaging information we mentioned is merely a detail that you can add to a contact...it doesn’t currently support actual IM. For that you need a service (Nimbuzz). I think Ovi Contacts is trying to accomplish this, but to my knowledge it only works within the Ovi Contacts realm (i.e. you can't IM Yahoo, MSN, etc. users)...I could be wrong about this last bit concerning Ovi Contacts though.

Does that make sense? In Contacts, tap a contact and edit their details. In Options tap 'Add Detail'. In that menu you will find a few different details to add to the contact...a Skype ID, a Yahoo ID, etc.

One small thing you didn't mention is that when the phone is locked and ringing, the "swipers" are relabled with more descriptive text ("Swipe to answer").

Here are some more small changes in the music player:

    - When viewing an album, the album name and artist are "locked" at the top of the screen.
    - When browsing music by artist, if there is only one album, you no longer see the "All Songs" option.
    - Not sure if this was there before, but touching the speaker icon at the bottom of the volume slider mutes the player.

With the back button in the music player, I like the new functionality. It seems to make sense to me that if I went to the music player via the home screen, clicking back should take me back to the home screen. One thing I do is in the music player, I go to Options -> Go to Music Library.
  • MajorDouble7 · 1 month ago
I agree with everything that you've said, macdea, but the back button thing kinda bugs me a little. If I'm in the Music Player via homescreen, browse through my music, select a track, and want to keep browsing, the back button still takes me back to the homescreen even though my last location was the 'All Songs' list. Otherwise, I completely agree with you...the 'Music Library' thing isn't that bad, but it is a few extra taps away than a simple 'Back' button should be.

Good call on the unlock swipes...I can honestly say that I had NO idea how to answer my phone when I first got it...I tried pushing the swipe, I tried pushing the green call softkey...none of it worked. I think I discovered the swipe action by accident.

Didn't notice, but I'm happy the 'All Songs' thing has been taken care of.

    Great comment.

    MD 7
  • macdea · 1 month ago
Ha! I think the only people who knew to swipe to answer were the N97 engineers.

I see your point on the music player and tend to agree now that I tried what you say. I guess I don't do that very often. They should make clicking on the song title and artist bring you to the music library. Please both of us.
  • MajorDouble7 · 1 month ago
I definitely agree on all counts.

    MD 7
  • Obi · 1 month ago
I'm glad I'm not the only one who was fooled by the swipe to answer feature. I actually think it's a really cool feature if you are informed about it, but at first it was a little frustrating since it took me a couple of tries to figure out how to answer my phone while it was locked.

    :::::V20 FREEZING AGAIN:::::
I've loaded 1000+ songs to my nokia N97 (V20 firmware) and on the next phone restart it got stuck to the nokia welcome screen. it's the same reason i had to hard reset my phone with v12 firmware. Prior to loading songs it was working fine.

IN THE HOPE FOR A SOLUTION TO A "FREEZING" PROBLEM
wasted time on 3 firmware updates during the past 4 months
and the problem is still there

USELESS PHONE - CRAPPY FIRMWARE - FROM PATHETIC BRAND
  • Rajesh · 1 month ago
At least you got V20. We in South Africa cannot even get the firmware upgrade. Useless Nokia consider us as fools!!!! Think again...we have a number of people gettign rid of the N97 which is generally a rubbish phone. My old E51 performs better.
  • MajorDouble7 · 1 month ago
One other thing that I've noticed...previous to v20, my phone was very picky about when it decided to charge (via USB to PC). Now, it seems that my USB to PC connection always charges the phone, no matter the battery level. I would consider this an improvement.

    MD 7
  • BnThereDnThat · 1 month ago
YES! This has been a significant difference! I had been having a serious problem where the N97 had stopped recognizing my USB port. After a semi-comical serious of misadventures (involving using another computer and installing PC Suite on it) I was able, at last, to install 2.0, and as a consequence it's far less annoying when it comes to voltage input, and it now recognizes my computer's USB. This also includes a battery recharger I had (JustMobile's "gum" charger), which formerly didn't work at all. This is a seriously good change, since I was despairing that my N97 had become half useless.
  • Simon · 1 month ago
"The clock appears at the top of the web browser when showing the status of a loading page."

This was there before, but it is only in Landscape mode, not in Portrait.

"Letters on the dialpad (however, those with European language packs installed won’t get this feature). "

I don't have the letters on my dialpad, and have a UK version (which admittedly is within Europe, but...), surely a UK version could/should have the letters if an American one does... it's the same 26 letters after all!

Anyone else noticed that when the keys (screen) is locked using the side switch, if somehow it tries to re-activate but is still locked, the screen seems to stay in the unlit mode where you can just see the screen display (greyed out) until you unlock. Previously it would go back to black after a few seconds, but it seems to remain in this partial state since v20, which seems to also have a bad impact on the draining of the battery because obviously the screen is "on" when it would normally be off. I need to check more to see exactly what is happening here.
  • Daniel · 1 month ago
Same happening to mine. I've found when I lock it the screen also stays on, until I unlock it, then lock it again.
  • stubear · 1 month ago
literally. fw 20 has fixed my phone, before the update, everytime i locked the phone with the slider on the side, when i tried to unlock it the screen wouldnt respond, and i mean EVERYtime. Since the update a week ago my phone has frozen once, touch wood, the only thing which i do hate about the update is the music player. i had the n95 8gb, and so i was used to easy access to playing music etc. and now that pressing back minimizes the music player, if i want to choose another song, (considering a lot of the time i launch it from the homescreen widget) i have to go to options, music library, playlists/ all songs, then choose. before i could just press 'back' and it would go back to whichever list i was browsing, also, it doesn't seem to refresh very well. I had something like 2899 songs in my list, i have since deleted at least 800 songs (all crap i just had on my computer) and i have actually left the refresh on all night and no change has occured, not even one song being removed!!. Please nokia, fix the music player. and im happy, anything else that comes is a bonus!!
  • stubear · 1 month ago
btw i meant it HASN'T frozen once, as in its worked everytime!!

I live in Thailand and I still can't upgrade my phone. Every time I run the Nokia Software Updater it tells me that the latest software available for my phone is 12.0.026, which is already installed. My phone is RM-505. Can anybody tell me what is going on?
  • Freak · 1 month ago
Yeah, mine too. I was one of the first guys out there to buy N97, and i am desperately waiting for this upgrade...why do WE have to wait for so long Nokia. WHY??? I feel like debranding my phone. After changing product code and update to v20, can i change back to the original product code and update normally to any future firmware(s)? What are the risks?
My Product Code: 058600 (RM-505) Singapore. Please advice, anyone? Thanks.

One thing that I have noticed (not sure if it was available in v12) is that if you long press a widget it brings up the settings menu for that widget.

As far as the music palyer is concerned, if I want to go back to the home screen I just push the red end call key which has always worked on my previous phones, whereas I find that I end up at the home screen when I just wish to go back the the last visisted list. It was a lot better the way it was previously.

  • froschy · 1 month ago
"One thing that I have noticed (not sure if it was available in v12) is that if you long press a widget it brings up the settings menu for that widget."

I thought this was a bug as the screen responses sometimes lag.

Nokia's silent policy on the changelog is plain stupid, if they just released it we wouldn't have to speculate on what they actually fixed/added or bugs that Nokia know about. I think it's the least they could do after I spent US $700 on this buggy phone.
  • EverythingBlaxx · 1 month ago
There is not silent policy on the changelog. It has already been released. The detailed changelog for specific product codes will be available once the firmware has been distributed completely as is always the case.
  • froschy · 1 month ago
Really? I've only ever seen unofficial changelogs. Where on the Nokia website would I find the official changelogs?
  • froschy · 1 month ago
Hey EverythingBlaxx - Not sure if you saw my response to your post but if you get a chance I would really appreciate it if you could provide me with a web address for the official Nokia changelogs.
  • EverythingBlaxx · 1 month ago
Long pressing to add/remove/change settings for homescreen widgets has been available since v10.
  • EverythingBlaxx · 1 month ago
Just found another one guys. They made a slight change to what happens when you receive a phone while the screen and keys are locked. Rather than just saying "Answer" and "Unlock" the screen now says "Swipe to Answer" and "Swipe to Unlock". Not a big change but I know a few people that were confused because they thought that they were buttons and not swipe bars.
  • marlboro35 · 1 month ago
Regarding the change in the "Answer" and "Unlock" buttons text, at least in Spanish the text length exceeds the button size and gets truncated. Very ugly effect !!

    Hey Everyone.
Im Much Awaiting My Nokia N97. (Four/Five Weeks Of Waiting And Saving *Sigh* Sucks Being A 16 Year Old With Crap Pay/Job)

Im Planing On Buying Mine. Unbranded/Unlocked $830 From Allphones In Australia.
Can Anyone Please, Please, Tell Me. If There Would be Anything Wrong With Buying That Phone? (I Am How Ever Planning On Updating Firmware. First Day I Get It A.K.A Before I Even Put Anything On It So Theres Nothing I Have To Back Up, Hahaha Im Lazy)
I Ask Because My Only Concern Is The Fact Its So Cheap. A Branded/Locked Phone Is About $1130, Does Anyone Have Any Helpful Hints.

OH! And I Only Use My Phone For Txting, Games (Already On My Memory Card) Occasional Call, Rare Bluetoothing. Lots Of Photo's, I Have Over 1500 Photo's No Vids. If Any. 1 or 2. And Only About 400 Songs.
(I Only Say This Incase It Has Some Importance) I Cant Picture Myself Really Using Internet Or The Ovi Store. The Main Reason I Want The Update Is Kenitic Scrolling. (Life Saver I Swear)

Anywhoo. Please Help If You Can, =)
  • Guest · 1 month ago
    NinjahhKittehh,

You will find it will have optus pre-installed as i did, and couldnt get the firmware updates without Optus or who ever giving it the green light. I debranded mine, took 15mins. Once debranded you have a completley unlocked device, with no operator settings.

Im not sure, but i think i have read debranding can void software warranty..anyone with more knowledge on this?

    Martin
  • NinjahhKittehh · 1 month ago
    Hey Martin! =)

When I Talked To The Lady On The Phone. (At Allphones) She Said It Was Unbranded. And Had No Carrier. And That My Telstra Sim Would Work. So Does That Mean It Is With Vodafone or Not? O.o (Sorry If That Sounds Dumb)

If It Does Still Mean Vodafone.
Because Im Not Egsactly.. Umm Tech Savy? How Does One Completely Unbrand There Unbranded Phone? (In Simple Terms If You Can. Seriously.. Not Tech Savy =P)

And If I Completely Fail At That. Is It Possible To Just Buy A Vodafone Sim And Update With That? Then Put My Telstra Sim Back In?

    Thanks!
  • Guest · 1 month ago
ok, I too was told my mobile was unbrandedm however, optus online and mms settings were set as default and optus logo appeared on start-up and shut down, along with optus applications which i couldnt remove that were taking up space on my C drive. I went back to All Phones who said they wouldnt give money back (even though purchased 3hours earlier) My argument being it had an operator already attached, sure, any sim card would work..but it prefered and kept putting optus online settings as default..very annoying.

    This link http://www.n97fanatics.com/complete-guide-to-un...

Explaines in detail and very easy to follow steps on how to debrand..i did it in 15mins aprox after a few whiskeys..so it must be easy!!

Now i have a "completely" debranded n97 which i bought for $840 rather than $980 for a nokia factory model, which is what they are selling for at Dick Smith Powerhouse

    Hope this helps,

    Martin

Hey! Thanks. That Was Really Helpful.
All I Gotta Do Know Is Wait Like 5 Weeks. yay? ... O.o
    Hahaha.

    Oh. One more Question.
Whats Your Personal Opionon On The Phone?
    Many Bad Stuff After Update?
  • NinjahhKittehh · 1 month ago
    Oh! Sorry. Also.

My Question About Sims? Does That Make A Difference? Just Putting A Optus/Vodafone Sim In And Doing it? Then Putting A Telstra One In After?

    Sorry If Im Annoying you.
  • Guest · 1 month ago
Just noticed ur most recent post,

Which SIM you use does not matter, i use Telstra, phone was unbranded..but as said..through Optus.
So no matter what sim you use, the device will work as it should, simply with a few pre-installed items from the service provider its been despatched from.

    Martin
  • NinjahhKittehh · 1 month ago
    Hey Again.

    Sorry. Lol.

What i meant was. doing the update. if its supposed to be unbranded but isnt. and its actually still optus. does putting an optus sim and doing the update make a difference? and then after doing the update. putting my telstra sim back in?

(I hope that made more sence. sorry again)
  • Guest · 1 month ago
makes no difference mate..100% unbranded devices get the updates first..then filters through the networks including unlocked but despatched from a network, at least thats been my experiance

Hope i have been of some help to you

    ..ok,

I previously used an N95 which i love..and still use mainly as music player with speakers.

N97 firmware v11..v12..too many issues, problems to name..at first i was unsure i made the right choice with my purchase.
However, after the firmware v20 i have come around and loving the n97 now, the main problem i have is the lens cover has scratched my camera lens deeply causing a white out on dusk photo's. Im taking this to nokia care centre to get fixed / replaced soon, its a common problem with this device, one which n97 fanatics have spoken about in recent past.
The touch screen and qwerty keyboard are great!! The web browser isnt 100% but easily got around by using Opera Mini

Over all, going back to N95 now feels so basic and limited..and if you have never used N95..it sill is a great device, but n97 offers more input meathods, memory, better running applications / games, and touchscreen.

I went in to Nokia (Adelaide - Australia), and I think they were clueless on the N97 scratching problem. I told them about it, and I have now had it back for 3 weeks, and it is scratched AGAIN! I now have to go back in, pay $400+ for a loan phone, and wait 48 hours. Not happy!! So, make sure the Nokia Care point is actually giving you the new lens, and not the old design (like they have obviously done with me). Good luck!
  • Guest · 1 month ago
    wow, u paid $400.. for a loan phone..really...??
  • Daniel · 1 month ago
Sorry, I should have said they freeze the money for the phone in your account. Then it takes up to 10 days or something to "unfreeze". So was a bit of a nuisance.
  • N97Support · 1 month ago
If the phone is "unbranded" then its not with Vodafone. branded phones can be unlocked, which means originally it would have been with Vodafone but as this is unbranded on the actual phone, it is a totally generic handset.

The way to unbrand a branded phone can be quite complicated depending on the network, but usually you just need the nokia phoenix software and navifirm and go from there. If it is branded I strongly do not suggest this if your not very technically savy and just ask your network for the unlock code to use with any sim.

Thats not a simple yes or no answer, you may be able to update with the vodafone sim, or it may just see you've updated to that specific software and you can go no further.
  • N97Support · 1 month ago
Yes de branding will void the warranty for both software and hardware. As all versions of the firmware are connected to a product, the engineer will soon see that the product do not, and thus warrantry will be void. Also if language packs are different etc etc.

So only do it if you think you are in a position where you wont need a warranty and can pay for anything that happens to the phone
  • aajohnf · 1 month ago
I was told by 3uk that it would void the warrantee if I did that. Tough!! I was sick up and fed of waiting for them to release.
I used the following sites to do this and it was very quick. You won't even know you've done it. No comeback tho if it does not work for you.
    http://www.nokia.nigelcoldwell.co.uk/firmware.htm
    http://www.b-phreaks.co.uk/
READ Nigels instructions carefully and you SHOULD have no problems

    excellent list! thanks for sharing.
  • upD8R · 1 month ago
Great list, it is more or less what I discovered, too.

One thing I'd like to mention: a very annoying bug in quick dialing was fixed! I couldn't quick dial numbers in the following format +49 (123) 456789, which is my default. This works now.

A bad change: no separate option any longer for setting delay time for the key lock - or did I miss it?
  • N97Support · 1 month ago
Indeed for some reason they have taken that user defined variable input away but this has been bumped to the team and will hopefully be changed back in the future.
  • Vince · 1 month ago
There is one which could be part of V20.
This is the following: Once i rebooted my phone i got a message on screen stating something like:

Internet Emergency calls, when your phone is out of the network range and you want to make an emergency call the phone will try to connect via WLAN to make an internet emergency call
  • daClaus · 1 month ago
    Another negative change:

no more predicitve search (is that the correct name?) in the player. With v12 it was possible to search for a string and the N97 showed any entry that CONTAINED this string. Now it only shows the entries that BEGIN with the string. This also works eg. in the albums list only for the album title, not for the artist.
  • denise118 · 1 month ago
I noticed this too. The "find" option in the previous fw was so useful for anyone with incorrect id3 tags.

I'm not forced to fix my tags in order to correctly find my songs.

Off topic: can anyone confirm if the mark function works in the music player. I used to use the shortcut shift dpad center to mark my songs to add to a playlist, but i dont think it functions like it used to.
  • huhuha · 1 month ago
I think the Music Player (or its options) was the only thing that was better in v12...except the coverarts...
  • tileeba · 1 month ago
Here is a feature that I would really like: It would be nice if when you are in the menu, you could start typing the name of an application and it would take you to that application. I don't know why they don't have this feature. You can already do that inside "music", for example. Anyone know how this feature could be suggested for future updates of nokia?
  • Kaspal · 1 month ago
someone stated before that while you cant do that by typing, you can actually doit with voice commands...

    just my 2 cents.
  • James · 1 month ago
one thing ive just realised (im pretty certain it wasnt there with V12) is that when your phone is locked, once you open the keypad the screen now unlocks. It used to irk me the amount of times id have to close the keypad, flick the unlock switch then reopen the keypad.
  • EverythingBlaxx · 1 month ago
Since v10, my phone has unlocked when I opened the slider so I don't think that's new. A bug just may have been fixed on your device

About the music player "back" button. It works if you access the player by long pressing Menu key and selecting Music Player. It's one extra step compared to just hitting the Player widget, but it's faster then going through library. Especially when I want to play a different song from the same playlist and have to go through all the submenus and try to find the right playlist that I have dozens of. Doesn't fix the problem but makes it easier till Nokia fixes it.
  • MajorDouble7 · 1 month ago
I've also noticed that the problem isn't quite so bad as I thought...if I
turn on Music Player from the homescreen (widget) and navigate to a
playlist, then play a song, the back button at that point will in fact take
me back to the playlist...I think that fact, coupled with what Alex says,
makes the situation that much more bearable.

These are just the features that you might not have noticed, it's nowhere near complete yet.

Do you think they wilfully changed the music player(when I press back it goes back to the homescreen and not to the Music Player) Is this a bug? Will it be resolved with the next firmware update?

    Robammerlaan,

there's been lots of discussion on this...from the responses I've seen, it
looks like it will most likely be modified/resolved next update...just an
    hypothesis.

I agree. They have to (let us) keep the original behaviour. Some of us *do* want to get back to the playlist we are playing from without having to renavigate through the UI again.

  • alanleow · 1 month ago
Hi Freak and all, Alan from Singapore.

I've decided to take the risk and debrand my phone so that I can do the update. Just hope that if I really need to bring the phone back for servicing, I can brand it again and no one will notice! My original product code is the same as yours from M1.

Something I've noticed for version 20.0.019, once I change my backlight duration to 25 seconds, and I try to leave any application in the background running, while I'm at the homescreen, my backlight will continue to be lit and it won't diminish!

I changed to 20 secs and so far it hasn't happened again. This phone is so quirky.

Anyone tried playing a movie since the update? I have some MP4 MPEG movies at 640x360 1024kbps and they ran just sweetly before. Since the update they stutter really bad :(

The following issue (see below) occured when trying to install the latest firmware update. I sent the phone to the service center in Alabama and when the returned it the battery cover was missing. I continue to get the run around from Nokia and am still trying to get my battery cover back, otherwise I have an expensive paperweight. Does anyone have a contact number or e-mail. The ones listed on the website are useless.

    Issues:

    1. After putting on the latest firmware update my phone stopped working. Every time I tried to make calls it wouldn’t allow me to and indicated not allowed. I was also not able to receive any incoming calls as well. Numerous calls to Nokia and my provider (T. Mobile) failed to fix the issue. The provider indicated everything was okay from their side. Any attempt to reset the device from the Nokia line was also unsuccessful. I am still not able to make or receive calls from my few month old Nokia N97. This all started right after the latest firmware update.

    2. A second issue was the battery cover never fully closed properly- upper right side never seemed to close fully. This was from the day I received the phone.
  • MajorDouble7 · 1 month ago
I can only bid you good luck in tracking down that battery cover...sounds like you really got put through the ringer on that one. As for the battery cover never 'locking' fully as you described it, the only thing I can think of is to investigate (when you get it back!) the cover and make sure that the two top pins that insert into the phone are in fact sliding under the frame (like hooks, if you will), while the rest of the pins just snap directly down into the frame. Does that make sense?

You may also want to try a hard reset as described by @EverythingBlaxx on this site. It may help get your functionality back.

    Good luck,

Alright, need the help of you Nokia experts here. Is this new 2.0 behavior?
I just received a text message that was 390 characters long. Normally, this would be split up over 3 messages, but I received it all in one message on my N97. I sent the message to my wife's e71 and it split it into three messages. Is this new 2.0 behavior for the n97 or am I just missing something?

To be clear, the n97 is displaying SMS messages longer than 160 characters as one message, even though they are coming across the network as multiple messages.
  • MajorDouble7 · 1 month ago
You know, I haven't had any experience with long texts since I got my N97...my first thought is that it might be an N97 AND carrier thing...maybe they (carrier) can send you the message as a whole because N97 allows this? I'm not really sure. All I know is that I wouldn't be surprised one bit if my carrier (Telcel) split up my long messages even if the N97 can handle it. Either way, I'd consider your situation a benefit. I hate receiving two+ messages when my phone can easily handle the load in one viewing.

Sorry, not much of an answer...

Does anyone have any problem selecting multiple non-contiguous items (e.g. songs) using the shift-OK combo? Say you are in a list of songs, keyboard open, and want to select the 1st and 4th song to add to a playlist. It used to work that you go to #1, press Shift-OK, go to #4, press Shift-OK and both will be checked. In v2, the Shift-OK starts the song which is *not* what I want.

Also, why won't Nokia allow us to add select an entire playlist to be added to another playlist? This one has been there since before.

Hiya people, i will apologise in case some one has already covered this before but you mention on your list the letters on the dial pad except for euro users i live in the UK so must be on the euro language pack how do i resolve this as it is a real pain.... please help anyone????

I pressed some key(s) on te qwerty kb and i was typin all upper case letters. it happened twice.but am not able to recreate it .
  • macdea · 1 month ago
This can be recreated by double-clicking the shift key, it acts as Caps Lock. There is a little bug though that you can't do this if you are at the first character of a sentence (i.e. after a period)
  • MajorDouble7 · 1 month ago
What really bothers me is that when starting a new word, double tapping shift puts on all caps, but the next letter goes back to lower-case. Really annoying. Definitely no common sense going on there.

Hi guys, I see our attempt to kill iPhone has not been a great success. But, fear not, there's another (new) victim to pry on, Droid. Let's change the nickname of N97 from "iPhone killer" to "Droid killer", shall we?
  • Mike Macias · 1 month ago
Funny thing is nobody said or wants the N97 to kill the iphone. The N97 is
    in an entire different league.
  • OlfRasmussen · 1 month ago
Ok, so, it's like... I don't know, WinMo 5 killer? But I thought WinMo is already killed? Is it like a new perversion of Nokia (stabbing on the deads)?
  • Mike Macias · 1 month ago
No... it's not meant to be a killer of anything. The N97 with it's full &
real qwerty keyboard and great multimedia capabilities is in a league of
it's own, as I've said before. Gosh... I wonder what you'd say once the N900
    comes out.
  • OlfRasmussen · 1 month ago
Why are you deflecting to N900? We're talking about N97 here. I don't care what N900 (will, probably, maybe, someday, later) have. But we have N97 here, premiumly charged, flagship product..., with sad realities.
  • Mike Macias · 1 month ago
Not deflecting, just getting you prepared for the next Fanatics site coming
up in a few weeks. You'll have yet another battle ground to play on!
  • MajorDouble7 · 1 month ago
Maybe we should just call the N97 the 'Bringer of Peace and Light'

I updated to the new firmware and I'm generally very happy with it so far. The phone is faster and more stable. However, I have one niggling problem - when I try to edit a song using "song details" in the music player, the phone freezes and I have to reboot it. Everything else in music player works fine, and the rest of the phone works fine..just this. Anyone else find this?
  • Alex · 1 month ago
I edited music files and added the artwork without any glitches. Try refreshing music library. did you try editing different files? is the result the same?
  • Sarah · 1 month ago
Thanks for replying. Yes, I refreshed the library and have tried to edit multiple files..same result - the music player shuts down and the phone freezes. Must just be me then... I was thinking of re-installing the firmware but NSU doesn't allow me to (it says I already have the latest firmware). Oh well, it's a feature I can live without I suppose.
  • Alex · 1 month ago
the only other thing I can think of is deleting all the music from the phone, then refreshing and rebooting and then just put a single song on to try it again) Good Luck!

When are we getting 2.0 in Malaysia? When i was using E71, firmware updates were just days away from the updates in Europe. Sometimes both updates came concurrently.

With N97, V12 was a month behind European update. Still dont get any V2.0 update yet. It has been 2 weeks. Nokia! Are you hearing this? N series people, how can you be so different from E series people in delivery speed???

I have emailed nokia many times, and dident really get an answer from them. Please, can someone help me. Thank You om advance
  • MajorDouble7 · 1 month ago
Not sure if I've already posted this, but I just want to confirm that I'm not the only one with the 'Back button hides photo browser' bug. Similar to the music Player bug we've talked about previously, but I've noticed it in the photo browser as well. No matter where in the photo browser I am, the back button closes the app and takes me to the homescreen.

    Anyone else?

just checked and no, I don't get that (knock on wood), but I get another glitch. sometimes when I browse through my phone for example in the music library and leave it by pressing End Call, if I try to access the Menu by pressing the Menu button it would send me back to my last open screen, in this case somewhere in the music library. and I have to Back button my way out of it cause End call wont do it. I don't remember this happening before

hi all....just updated to the new firmware..i like it phone is a little faster than before. Although there one major problem i am facing post updating that is, the screen wont change to landscape mode by turning the phone and vice versa, when i pull out the qwerty it turns to landscape even if the phone is upright :(....anybody knows how to fix this?
    Thanks...Adi

P.S: This is an awesome site..cheers.
  • adishell · 1 month ago
tried the hard reset problem persists :(
  • MajorDouble7 · 1 month ago
    adishell,

I would double check that your settings are adjusted correctly. Menu >
    Settings > Phone > Sensor Settings > Turning Control > Auto-Rotate Display.
Here you can decide what happens when you tilt the phone sideways. Believe
it or not, there's an option to turn off of the landscape view, which is
probably what happened in your case (either with the update, or more likely
    with the hard reset).

As for the slider action, my N97 has always switched to landscape view
automatically when sliding open the keyboard. It won't go back to portrait
at all, no matter how hard you try (with the keyboard still open, of
course). For a while, this seemed strange to me, but after having my N97
for some time now, it of course makes perfect sense. I've never actually
needed to see the screen in portrait with the keyboard out.

    Hope this helps,
    MD 7

The phone is much better with the update, faster, easier to use.
The only problem I have had so far is trying to set up Vlingo, when I go through the set-up stages select language, next then data plan required , ive choosen my Home wireless router - next- checking connection that seems to work, then accpet terms . I then do the hold and speak do as requested then get this message

An unexpected server error has occured, please try again.

Ive tried know so many tims and it still doesnt work, has anyone had the same problem, have you managed to find a solution.
Vlingo look quite a good app, I wouldnt mind giving at try, so any suggestion would be much apprecaited. Thanks MM
  • MajorDouble7 · 1 month ago
    Mike,

I haven't had any issues with Vlingo whatsoever...you may want to think about resetting phone since the update. I did mine, and I got a ton of C Drive space and everything seems to work fine. There's a detailed article about it by @EverythingBlaxx here http://www.n97fanatics.com/so-you-want-to-reset...

If you're not into resetting your phone, the only thing I can suggest is trying to connect via GPRS instead of your home network...not sure why this would make a difference, but perhaps it will.

    Cheers,
    MD 7
  • Mike M · 1 month ago
Thanks for the message, to be honest Im not to techy, so not sure what a reset will do or the risks, I wanted to ask, when you set-up Vlingo was there anything else you needed to set-up or change in the phone that wasnt included in the VL set-up. Thanks again
  • MajorDouble7 · 1 month ago
There was nothing else at all other than what you described...in fact, it is amazingly easy. If I recall, it just asks the questions that you said, then it goes through a quick tutorial and shows you what Vlingo can do. After that it's worked like a charm for me every time. You may want to uninstall and reinstall it as well, that might help...again, try to set it up to connect through your mobile network, rather than your home router. There may be a problem with it accessing your home network.
